Math Bootcamp for young teens: Three Outstanding students win STEMi tablets.

There has been poor performance in local and national and mathematics assessments among children between 9 and 13 years old. Such consistent under-performance is often attributed to factors like teaching approaches in Mathematics, lack of instructional materials, peer-to-peer learning, heavy reliance on memory work, lack of practice and shortage of math teachers.

STEMi Makers of Africa in partnership with the STEM and Arts Network, USA hosted a 3-month weekend Math bootcamp for 45 young kids. The objective of the project was to integrate a simpler approach where students aged 9 – 13 years old overcome math anxiety, excel in problem-solving, explore gamified maths and build confidence.

Students were imparted in:

  • Geometry Area and Perimeter + Cube and Tower problems to
  • Sequence and series,
  • Divisibility rules,
  • PEDMAS,
  • Algebra and Work Backwards Problems, Distance and Work Problems, Probability Problems
  • LCM and GCF
  • Number Theory Problems

Three students were selected as winners based on assignment submissions, collaboration, virtual attentiveness/ proactiveness and completion of classroom tasks. These winners each received a STEMi workbook tablet that will enhance their study experiences, power to research and solve computational problems.

Chisom Bernice Madubueze STEMi Math Winner

It gives us great pleasure to announce the winners of the just concluded Math Bootcamp as Alexis Setornam Kassah from Winneba, Chisom Bernice Madubueze from Makurdi, Nigeria and Theresa Seyram Kosivi from Winneba, Ghana.

Guardian of Alexis, shared how this prize would help her ward. “Thank you so much to STEMi Makers of Africa for a well coordinated event and for showing young children that they can excel in Mathematics. Alexis is so happy about this device and how it can help in her studies. As a parent, I will ensure to provide all the necessary support and anchor to see her grow and stand out in her studies.

The guardian of Theresa also extended appreciation and how Theresa’s performance in class had significantly improved. “Theresa always looks forward to Saturday classes. This is one activity that I have watched her develop a strong interest in. She loves her teacher, Varini Kadakia and she has expressed how the teacher is always so patient with them in the class. We are grateful for this neurodevelopmental change that the Math bootcamp has done for Theresa. She has grown to be more patient, tolerant and more interested in Math”. Chisom Madubueze also extended appreciation by herself through a video. She was immensely thanked and blessed STEMi Makers of Africa for the prize and assured to serve as a Math ambassador in her class.

Thank you so much to our amazing parents, guardians and partners (STEM & Arts, USA and the Innocent Chukwuemeka Chukwuma Foundation) for the unwavering support and enormous contributions towards the success of the Math Bootcamp.
