STEMi commemorates World Day of Assistive Technologies

On the 6th of June 2025, we will be supporting the #UnlocktheEveryDay campaign at the World Assistive Technology Day. We believe that no one should be prevented from going to school or work because they can’t get the Assistive Technology they need.

Today, 2.5 billion people need at least one form of assistive product – such as wheelchairs, eyeglasses, hearing aids,  prosthetics and  digital devices. But today only 10% of people in low income countries can access the Assistive Technologies they need. The 4th of June saw the first ever World Day for Assistive Technology as part of the “Unlock the Everyday” campaign and uniting people, communities from all sectors around the world.

At STEMi Makers of Africa, we are improving access for all, reducing inequalities and unlocking an Africa where no one is prevented from earning a living, going to school or living a fulfilling life.

Without access to appropriate and affordable assistive technology in education and the work environment, more than 30% of the global population won’t meet their most basic human needs. Together, we are calling for organizations, policymakers and the public to show support, take action to improve access to assistive technology, and help unlock an Africa where there are opportunities for all.

Speaking at the campaign, Claudette Nkenti commented that the World Day of Assistive Technology commemorates the importance and vital role AT plays in the lives of people with disabilities and older adults.  This day reinforces the necessary support and funding the federal government and social enterprise organizations like STEMi Makers of Africa provides to ensure people receive the assistive technology necessary to engage in education, employment, and community living. Assistive technology allows individuals with disabilities and older adults to be included in their communities and in inclusive classrooms and workplaces and these devices are necessities, not luxury items.

At STEMi Makers of Africa, we are reducing inequalities in schools through assistive technologies and empowerment by ensuring equitable access to teaching tools, providing comprehensive training and support, and fostering a culture of inclusivity. This involves addressing the needs of all learners, including those with disabilities, neurodivergent individuals, and those facing language barriers, to enable them to thrive in a diverse learning environment.

Join us and let’s unlock a world where there are opportunities for all.
